Iveco in conjunction with Volgren Australia have manufactured the first Australian Built hybrid-electric bus. This bus will form part of 12 month trial with the Victorian Government.
Australia ’s first hybrid-electric bus trial was launched today adding to the Brumby Labor State Government’s $38 billion investment towards a sustainable and lower emissions transport system through the Victorian Transport Plan.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the $500,000 trial, which will involve buses on two outer suburban routes, will assess the viability of hybrid buses in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the public transport sector.
“This Australia-first trial is the latest addition to the Brumby Labor Government’s portfolio of electric vehicle technology initiatives and again shows we are taking action to provide a sustainable and healthy future for all Victorians through innovative projects,” Mr Jennings said.
“We believe the hybrid-electric bus trial will show how improvements in transport technology can deliver air quality improvements and reduce our carbon emissions.
“It is estimated this hybrid-electric technology will provide a saving of around 20 per cent on fuel and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional diesel bus.”
Should the hybrid-electric bus trial be successful, Mr Jennings said the Brumby Labor Government would consider increasing its hybrid-electric bus fleet.
